Chevrolet Recalls C8 Corvette Z06 and ZR1 — America’s HyperCar Hits a Speed Bump?

If you’ve been dreaming about your next thrill in a C8 Corvette Z06 or ZR1, hold up, GM has just issued a recall that puts the brakes on deliveries and has owners watching fuel pumps a lot more closely. Let’s unpack what this means.

What’s the Issue?

Chevrolet has initiated a voluntary recall for all 2023–2026 Corvette Z06 and 2025–2026 Corvette ZR1 models. Why? A fuel-spillage hazard during refueling that could cause a fire. According to the recall documents, excess fuel may splash into the left-side fuel-filler pocket and hit the radiator fan, which can ignite it—not exactly the mid-engine thrill you signed up for.

What Models Are Affected?

This recall specifically impacts:

  • 16,052 units of the Z06 (2023–2024)
  • Approximately 9,234 units of the ZR1 (2025–2026)
Total: ~25,500 Corvettes across North America. Delivery of unsold models has been officially halted.

What’s Chevrolet Doing About It?

GM plans to install a protective shield at refueling points to divert excess fuel away from ignition components. They’re also linking the issue partly to malfunctioning gas pumps. No timeline yet, but safety is the stated priority. Dealers must confirm the shield is installed before the cars can be delivered again.

Should Owners Be Freaked Out?

Yikes – a Corvetted Corvette actually catching fire? That’s enough to make you rethink that mid-engine dream. Still, GM calls this a rare occurrence and appears to be acting swiftly. If you drive one of these hypercar beasts, don’t overfill the tank and remove the nozzle carefully—you’ll likely be safest for now.

Why It Matters for Car Fans

The C8 Corvette platform shook up the performance scene—it’s a bona fide supercar slayer with American roots. The Z06 packs a naturally aspirated 670-hp LT6 V8, while the twin-turbo LT7 in the ZR1 blasts out well over 1,000 hp. But when it’s an exotic that literally burns at the gas pump, high-performance becomes high drama.
